The Nightwatchmen (1994)

Stratis Karras' award winning play that examines the exhausted lives of two men reminiscent of Beckett's heroes Gogo and Didi.

Two ageing nightwatchmen, Pipi & Gabriel, share a flat and live out the daily humdrum of their repetitious lives, like any other "odd couple". The only visitor in 30 years has been their elderly neighbour Erophili, who, like them, is living out the extinction of her life. The chance arrival of a young woman promises something new and throws the mundane routine into comic and tragic chaos.

It presents a comical, at times, blackly comic world with a wide range of emotional highs, lows and colour. Yet the same bleak message that Beckett communicates comes through. Life is merely an endless soul destroying repetition made bearable by unfulfilled hopes.

In Greek.

In 1996, the production was revived for the 14th Sydney Greek Festival.

"Presented wholly in Greek ... read the English synopsis, put it away and take in the physical peformances. ... Mastrosavas's cast are superb. It's fascinating to watch a dour Beckettian concept being played out in commedia dell'arte, come Laurel and Hardy style."
David O'Brien, dB Magazine.
