Cafe Cavafy (1996)

A music drama based on the life and times of the "father" of Greek Modernism, Constantine Cavafy who drew the literary attention from Athens to Alexandria in his life time.

A wondrous figure, larger than life, this production is set in one of the Egyptian cafes frequented by Cavafy, as the audience is taken on a journey of reminiscences through his life, loves and the political emergence of Egypt as an independent nation.

Researched in Adelaide, Athens, Alexandria and Cambridge, this original work had its world premiere in 1996. Cavafy's poetry is set to the inspired music of Arthur Giannopoulos.

Written, designed and directed by Max Mastrosavas.
Music by Arthur Giannopoulos.
Computer generated stage iconography by Grant Hancock.

In 1996, the play was nominated as Most Promising New Show by Messenger Press.

In 1997, Theatro Oneiron restaged the production in Thessaloniki as part of the European Cultural Capital Festival.

"It is a warm, deeply moving story, with anger, rage, pathos, erotica and passion to spare. ... Mastrosavas is to be congratulated for opening the senses to this wonderful poet, and for producing such an epic upon the stage. This play will be back."
Arna Eyers-White, dB Magazine
